Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about converting pictures to WebP with PictoWebP.

Is PictoWebP really 100% free?

Yes. PictoWebP is free forever — no credit card, no subscription, no watermarks, no limits on how many pictures you can convert to WebP.

Does PictoWebP upload my pictures anywhere?

No. All conversion happens in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your pictures never leave your device. We cannot see them, and neither can anyone else.

Which input formats are supported?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, and existing WebP files. Any image your browser can decode can be converted to WebP.

Does converting PNG to WebP preserve transparency?

Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so transparent PNG backgrounds carry over perfectly.

Can I convert animated GIF to animated WebP?

The browser's Canvas API converts only the first frame of animated GIFs to a static WebP. For animated WebP output we recommend a dedicated tool — it's on our roadmap.

Why is the output WebP sometimes larger than the input?

If your source image is already aggressively compressed (for example, a low-quality JPG), re-encoding it at a high WebP quality setting can produce a slightly larger file. Try lowering the quality slider to 70–80.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit. The practical limit is your device's memory. Most modern phones and laptops handle images well over 50MB without issue.

Does PictoWebP work offline?

Yes — PictoWebP is a Progressive Web App. Once the page loads, the converter continues to work without an internet connection.

Can I use PictoWebP for commercial projects?

Yes. PictoWebP is free for personal and commercial use. The WebP files you produce belong entirely to you.
